Putney is not Manhattan
That's the title of my editorial in the new edition of The Putney Paper.
In it, I highlight the very real threat to our community from several plans for tower blocks, ranging from the two towers planned for opposite East Putney tube station to the 42-storey blocks on the Ram Brewery site in Wandsworth town centre.
I have nothing against high-rise living but one of the things that makes Putney the place we love is its human scale; that it isn't Manhattan. You can read the editorial here on my website or by downloading the Summer 2008 edition of The Putney Paper.
Free swimming by 2012
The government has unveiled plans to make all public swimming pools, including Putney Leisure Centre, free for all by 2012 as part of our Olympic legacy.
The plans will also mean that from next April pensioners and children will get free entry to swimming before the scheme is expanded to everyone in time for the 2012 London games. More from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport here.
This great move reminds me of one of the first things Labour did in government in 1997: abolishing entry charges to national museums and galleries.
